The storied history of Smith & Wesson firearms began in 1852, when Horace Smith and Daniel B. Wesson started developing the Volcanic rifle, the precursor to the famous Winchester lever-action. Although no one knew it at the time, the two men would go on to establish one of the world’s iconic firearm companies.

Although the Volcanic rifle and its parent company, the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company, were short lived, Smith and Wesson were determined to make their mark, and in 1857 they began production on the Smith & Wesson Model 1, the first commercially successful cartridge revolver. During the Civil War, the cartridge revolver became so popular that Smith & Wesson was forced to expand just to meet demand for the Model 1.

In 1870, Smith & Wesson began manufacturing the Model 3 American, the world’s first large-caliber cartridge revolver. The Model 3 revolver was another huge success for the company, and Smith & Wesson’s prominence in American lore was solidified when the United States Cavalry, needing a high-powered yet portable firearm for use on the Western Frontier, placed an order for 1,000 Model 3 revolvers.

In 1899, Smith & Wesson began production on the Model 10 revolver, which would go on to become the most popular centerfire revolver of the 20th century; and in 1935 the company introduced the .357 Magnum, the world’s first Magnum revolver and another perennial S & W favorite.

In 1965, Smith & Wesson introduced the world’s first stainless steel revolver, the Model 60, and in 1971 they received yet another boost in popularity when their Model 29 .44 Magnum was used by Clint Eastwood in Dirty Harry.
