This 5.56x45 cartridge by Winchester isn’t your run of the mill FMJ. It’s an M855 Green Tip, also known as the SS109 or “penetrator.” The penetrator projectile’s slightly greater weight gives it a higher sectional density than a conventional 55 grain bullet, but that’s not the only reason why it penetrates so well. This Winchester USA M855 bullet’s green tip indicates that it ends in a seven grain steel spike, which enables it to reliably pierce a 0.12” thick sheet of steel well beyond 600 yards. For armored or vehicular threats, the penetrator is the bullet for the job.
