The gun was cleaned and I went back to the range with Sellier and Bellott 180 gr fmj. This time, I fired 200 rounds and had several hangups. The bullet would be wedged into the chamber, about half of the bullet was still visible, but the other half inside the chamber. The angle of entry was too much and the bullet stuck. You couldn't tap the slide to get the bullet to seat; instead, used a screwdriver to force the bullet to go into the chamber at a more reasonable angle. Out of 200 rounds, there were maybe 10 issues with the bullet stuck in the chamber - sometimes when the slide was released on a freshly loaded mag, and sometimes during the course of shooting, and sometimes when I racked the slide. I complained to Springfield and they suggested using another type of bullet.
My next batch of bullets with Magtech 180 gr fmj. In the first 100 rounds, the jamming issue noted in the previous paragraph was much more in force. Now the gun jammed maybe 20 times in 100 rounds.
Springfield sent me a 2nd Day FedEx tag and I sent the pistol in. I received the pistol back exactly 2 weeks later. They indicated the following work was done:
RECUT & POLISHED FEED RAMP
Today I took the gun out to shoot the last 100 rounds of the Magtech and I still had problems, but this time only when I released the slide on a fresh mag. Racking the slide always worked, as did slowly closing the slide on a bullet. During shooting the gun worked flawlessly, but the empty cases fly clear over my head and off to the left - possible extractor or recoil spring issue. When I released the slide on a mag and the bullet stuck, I could pull back on the slide a touch and the bullet would right itself and go into the chamber. After about 50 rounds, this issue disappeared, so I am hoping this is a breaking in thing.
On the positive side, the gun shoots wonderfully and the trigger is great - I really have to pull slowly to discover the small amount of creep that is there.. I am able to shoot this gun better than any I've ever had before. The front side is easy to acquire since it has red fiber optic in it. However, the sights are fixed, so my point of aim is not exactly as the 6 O'Clock position.
I have a feeling that this last feeding issue will go away with time, and I will write back if that is the case.
