KEL TEC SUB 2000 RIFLE OVERVIEW

The Kel-Tec Sub 2000 rifle iframe or stock is made of polymer, which effectively camouflages the 4 ½ pound weight nicely.

“Arriving in a box, no larger than one of my kids’ old board games, the Sub-2000 Gen 2 was nestled in and folded up, not broken down. We’re used to getting “long” guns shipped in long, narrow, rectangular boxes. So, it took a few seconds to wrap my mind around a gun that folds into a 16-by-7-inch space.” (1)

To fold it up, simply pull on the series of tabs to disengage the halves and secure the barrel to the clip on the stock. Unfolding takes some getting used to because of a stiff pivot point, but it assembles nicely with a reassuring click.

Charging the firearm was a bit more tricky. The bolt assembly is heavy because it's in two pieces and has to compensate for the pressure generated by a pistol caliber cartridge in a short rifle. Accuracy is great, and there are rarely malfunctions. You can spend days on the range and never experience a jam or misfire. The recoil is strong, and it could benefit from a cheek pad and some rubber on the stock. The barrel is threaded and ready for all the muzzle accessories you want to throw on it.

The hinged ghost ring rear sight provides accuracy immediately out of the box. The front sight is in a removable aluminum housing and helps with elevation control and wind.
The lightweight, 16” threaded muzzle allows for the mounting of suppressors and other muzzle accessories.
The caliber allows for S&W, Glock, or M&P magazine variants in either 9mm or .40 caliber to suit each individual shooter’s preference.
The polymer grip is reinforced and contoured for positive control of the rifle in any size hands.
The charging handle is conveniently located under the bolt tube, allowing for ambidextrous and ergonomic function.
The standard, 3-position stock has a length of pull ranging from 13” to 14.25”.

The Kel-Tec Sub 2000 Gen 2 is intended to improve performance with a more ergonomic design overall and a host of new features that weren’t included on the original. There’s a slimmer handguard, incorporating a Picatinny rail on top and underneath for mounting more accessories.
The Gen 2 also includes an adjustable stock so shooters can alter the length to their preference. The polymer front sight on the original became an aluminum front sight on the Gen 2. “The first time you extract it from a briefcase, fold it into the open position, insert a magazine and prepare to fire, you can think, even momentarily, about just how cool it is to have a folding carbine like the Kel-Tec SUB-2000 at the ready.” (2)
