History of Steyr Arms

In 1864, Austrian industrial pioneer Josef Werndl founded a company in a sawmill that would eventually become Steyr Arms. By 1891, Steyr Arms became the largest firearm manufacturer in the world. Through the rich history of the company, Steyr’s standards have always remained true, forging four pillars of excellence for their company: innovation, precision, reliability, and safety.

In the late 1800s to early 1900s, Steyr Arms released very popular and quality-made pistols and rifles. This included the Mannlicher 8mm, the first and final model of their Mannlicher straight-pull rifle. Over the years since their first sets of guns, Steyr has continued to innovate with the introduction of many new firearms designed for military and sporting use. In 1969, the world’s first commercially available long-range tactical rifle, the legendary SSG 69, remained virtually unchanged and in production for 46 years. In 1977, the iconic AUG bullpup, another revolutionary rifle, was introduced and adopted by the armed forces of more than 24 countries. This gun is still produced today!

By 1998, Steyr Arms released the general-purpose scout, a rifle, based on Steyr’s Safe Bolt System, which is currently in use on several firearms such as the Tactical Heavy Barrel. Continuing its introduction of state-of-the-art firearms, the three-time FCSA Hunter Class world champion, HS .50, was introduced in 2004.

Steyr continues to anticipate and cater to the needs of hunters as well as it does those of military and law enforcement. In the past decade, Steyr Arms has moved headquarters to the US and has seen the introduction of the CL II and the SM12, both with their SX Synthetic stocked versions. The company also re-entered the rimfire market with the release of the immensely popular Zephyr II rifle, after discontinuing the original Zephyr nearly 50 years ago.
