Leupold Optics - an American Success Story

The history of Leupold Optics is a distinctly American success story. In 1907, a German immigrant named Fred Leupold and his brother-in-law, Adam Volpel, started a small shop in Portland, Oregon dedicated to repairing survey equipment. By the end of the century, Leupold Optics had become one of the world’s foremost producers of performance sports optics and accessories.

Leupold Rifle Scope Beginnings

From the beginning, Leupold flourished as a producer of a broad array of surveying products, including the world’s first water level recorder. In 1942, the company began making rifle scopes when, as the legend goes, Fred Leupold’s son Marcus became so frustrated with his rifle scope that he decided to invent one himself, and the rest was history.  

Today, Leupold military-grade and hunting scopes, binoculars, rangefinders and mounting systems are world renowned, and their scopes are used throughout the U.S. Armed Forces and Secret Service.
