History of Trijicon

Trijicon began in 1981, founded by Glyn Bindon under the name Armson USA. Bindon was an aeronautical engineer at Ford Motor Company, having previously worked on the US Navy’s F-8U Crusader and other NASA projects. At that time, Bindon’s brother was living in South Africa. While on a trip to see him, a family friend brought up an occluded-type gunsight that used tritium and fiber optics in its construction that he had constructed. It was already being sold in South African stores with prominent success. They needed someone to market this red dot to the American markets, so Bindon decided to do so as a side job under the name Armson OEG.

In 1983, the sight hit American stores and was an instant hit. People loved it because of the variety of mounting systems for popular rifles and shotguns. Within a few short years, sales grew for Armson OEG and the red-dot sight. By 1985, they were introducing the world’s first tritium-reticle rifle scope—the Spectrum Riflescope—to the general public. That’s not all, though. Armson OEG also introduced the world’s first commercially available tritium-illuminated iron sights for handguns: Bright & Tough Night Sights. At the same time, Bindon decided to change the name of the company to Trijicon. The name is a combination of two words: “Tritium” and “icon” with the letter “j” added in to form the word Trijicon.

Since its inception, Trijicon has continued to influence the firearms industry. The vast majority of their products are currently made in the USA with all products proudly designed in Michigan.
