When choosing a rifle magazine, first of all, you have to determine what type of rifle you need ammunition for. Are we talking about a hunting rifle, an AR rifle, or an AR rifle?
Hunting Rifle Magazines
While most handgun magazines feed bullets through a single type of magazine, rifles are fed by a variety. Detachable box magazines are used in a variety of military rifles. Detachable box magazines are self contained and are able to be loaded or unladed while detached from the actual firearm. The benefits of a detachable box include speed; the process of reloading is sped up allowing the operator quick use of the ammunition.
Assault rifles require a different type of magazine from a standard rifle. Standard issue AR Magazines are 20-30 round staggered column magazines or a traditional box magazine with 40-45 round capabilities. These types of rifle magazines are made from the following materials: plastic, steel or aluminum. Drum magazines also work and have 90-100 rounds, however there are lower rounds available, as low as 5 rounds per mag.
For AK magazines the standard capacity mag is 30 rounds, and they come in multiple varieties, including up to a 75 round drum magazine. AK Magazines are known for their pronounced curve that helps to smoothly feed the bullets into the chamber. Typically AK magazines are made from heavy steel, to insure their resistance to damage.
