The Carbine is an intermediate range ‘brush gun.’ Weighing in at less than 6 lbs, this handy rifle has a straight comb walnut stock and open sights. For a long time this was CZ's only model chambered in 7.62×39 (now joined by the 527 Youth Carbine), it combines low recoil with effectiveness on medium-sized game such as deer and wild boar, making it ideal for younger shooters. Both chamberings offered in the Carbine are economical to shoot given their service rifle heritage and the availability of surplus ammunition.
Built to CIP specifications, CZ's 7.62×39 chambers are ideal for shooting steel-cased surplus ammo. Designed to shoot .311 bullets, some American brass ammo may not perform as well as the imported steel-cased variety because of SAAMI brass dimensions and varying bullet diameters.
CZ's .223s will happily eat 5.56, since CIP doesn’t differentiate between the two cartridges and just has the higher pressure as its standard. So CZ's .223s will shoot everything from the cheapest Russian steel to match .223 brass ammo.

- Just neat
Great compact little shooter. Everything about this rifle is smooth. I did not add a scope as I prefer irons on a carbine such as this. In this gun, you get accuracy and reliability of a bolt action, compact and utilitarian size, negligible kick, the power of a 30 caliber centerfire, effective range of 200 meters or more....and cheap ammo. This rifle doesn't excel at anything in particular but it fills a lot of important voids very, very well. What's not to like?
- A "beaut."
A real *sweetie* and I'm lovin' it. Not my first CZ (I also own a 455 Ultra Lux .22LR and a CZ 75 Compact 9mm pistol) so I wasn't surprised at the terrific workmanship and finish. Initially, the recoil felt, well, brutal. I put a Shooterpads(tm) gel recoil pad on her, and that was all she wrote. If I could afford that much ammo, I could now probably shoot this puppy ALL DAY. Magazine-loading problems (see other reviews) are *way* overblown! A HAMMER? Really? Come ON! After the third round loaded, a rap of the base against something solid while pressing down on the rear of the top round) "settles" the rear ends of cartridges already loaded and allows next two to go in easy-peasy. Maybe it takes an ex-GI to know tricks like that. Mine came w/o scope rings, but a pair of Burris rings (16mm dovetail, NOT Picatinny/Weaver!) MADE for the CZ worked great. Rear dovetail has "stop notch" to lock ring in place. My Nikon Prostaff 2-7 x 32 fit perfectly--correct eye relief was easy and gave NO interference w/rear iron sight *or* bolt handle. I lucked out apparently and didn't need to wait for mine as others have. You should grab one now, too. I think you'll be glad you did.
- What a great little carbine!
I just happen to have a gazillion rounds of 7.62 x 39 ammo and was looking for something other than an AK to shoot them with. This little guy should do the trick. It does come with rings as the gentleman reported earlier, and I happened to have a 2-7x34mm Redfield laying around (or so I told my wife) to mount with them so I am good to go.
In order to avoid feeling selfish (yes, I bought it for me), I plan to train my nephew to shoot it accurately, and allow him to take his first hog with it.
- Great little rifle
Like the previous reviews, had to get on the notify list as these seem to sell out everywhere shortly after they come in stock.
Perfect function. Love the mini-Mauser action. 2" groups with Tula/Wolf ammo so I cannot complain at all.
Model was listed without rings but came with CZ rings (had already bought Warne Medium rings though). Worked without issue with my Sightron S1 3-9 scope.
The magazine needs a bit of care when loading. You need to push down on the loaded round at the rear of the magazine for the 4th and 5th rounds and it will load fine. If you don't, it will tilt and bind.
Seriously love this little gun.
- Great carbine,crap magazine
Love the rifle. Thanks to grabagun for finding me one,the only one available for two months. great rifle, excellent fit and finish,2 inch groups with cheap russian ammo, fantastic groups with brass. Magazine jams upon loading fourth round, fifth needs a hammer,Can not understand why a quality gun maker can't make a quality mag.CZ should make the best mag available for forty bucks.
- Get on the notify list!
This is the perfect companion to your 7.62x39mm semi auto rifle. I have many different firearms, and this has become my new favorite. Light weight, accurate with cheap (Wolf) ammo, good iron sights, and quality you would expect from a CZ product.
An added plus: Mine shipped WITH CZ scope rings, unlike what the title says. This rifle was a STEAL at grabagun's price without rings, with rings, it is simply unbeatable. Get on the list for this rifle, and snatch one up as soon as you can!
Grabagun's shipping is fast, and their customer service top notch. I would not hesitate to buy from them again (already looking at a S&W revolver).
