History of CCI
Richard “Dick” Speer was a machinist at Boeing Aircraft’s Seattle plant when he realized there were greater opportunities in the component bullet business. While there already were several proprietary rifle cartridge designs on the market, they simply weren’t supported by the big ammo companies. Speer decided to work in this very small, niche market, then moved to Lewiston, Idaho and began producing special cases using an impact extrusion process. Thus, Cascade Cartridges, INC, CCI, was founded.
Unfortunately, Speer ran into trouble while producing these special cases. Though Speer’s process was sound, brass had essentially been exhausted from the market to support the WWII effort. So, Speer had to make a change. He realized that component primers were not only in short supply, but the number of choices were limited. As a result of this discovery, CCI went into the component primer business. Their first contract was to fulfill a military order using the chlorate FA-70 formula, and from there, they began using non-corrosive, non-mercuric formulas for sporting cartridges. Because of CCI, reloaders now had a steady supply of rifle and pistol primers—something that was previously unheard of.
To manage the new business, Speer bought a 17-acre chicken ranch next to the Lewiston Gun Club, quickly building labs and manufacturing buildings. The CCI plant still occupies that property to this day, producing powerful primers, world-class ammunition, and other reloading products.
